Vakra Skandha Chalana

Vakra Skandha Chalana brings mobility, release, and expansion into the sides of the body, shoulders, and spine. The alternating side movement stretches the neck, ribs, shoulders, and waist while helping release tension stored in the upper back and side body. The exercise also improves spinal flexibility, posture, and breath capacity by creating more space through the chest and ribcage.

The side bending motion helps open energetic pathways along the spine and sides of the torso while creating a strong feeling of release through the shoulders and neck. The exercise stimulates the Heart Chakra (Anahata) through the opening of the chest and shoulders, while the deep side compression and expansion also activate the Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana), supporting emotional flow, creativity, and inner softness. The movement through the neck and upper spine additionally supports the Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) and encourages clearer expression and energetic release.

To practice:

Sit in a cross legged position and place the fingertips lightly onto the shoulders with the elbows relaxed. Exhale and gently bend the upper body to one side, bringing the elbow downward while the opposite side of the body lengthens and opens. Inhale and rise back up through the center and continue alternating from side to side in a smooth and steady rhythm with the breath.

If the side bend feels too intense for the neck or lower back, make the movement smaller and focus on creating length through the spine rather than depth in the bend.

If needed, sit on a cushion.
